Sometimes, I need to remind myself that I am a mommy, to a toddler, in my forties. Most of the time, I don’t have time to think about it. But, what I do think about, is my health. And, how important it is for me to feel healthy and strong, every day! I don’t care about the number of birthdays I celebrate. I care about feeling my best, and living as long as I can, for my son, Chase! Recently, I started adding collagen powder to my health regime. I read a lot about it, and I figured it was time to give it a try.
About two month ago, I received a package from Ancient Nutrition. An on-line health store co-founded by Dr. Josh Axe. Ever since I learned about having the MTHFR Mutation (a genetic mutation that limits my body’s ability to detox), I began following Dr. Axe. Reading his books, and following his protocol for a healthy gut. I believe that everything I learned, so far, from Dr. Axe’s and his resources, has helped me, tremendously! Needless to say, I was thrilled to receive this package of products. One, being a multi-collagen protein powder!
What is Collagen? Why Do We Need It?
I first learned about collagen powder, (what it is, and how people take it) via Instagram stories! I forget who it was. But, someone was making up their morning coffee, and she added a scoop of this “collagen powder” to her cup. After stirring it in, it looked like the powder blended in, just fine. This person shared some general information about collagen powder and practically swore that the powder was odorless and too subtle to taste.
I read a few articles and research studies on collagen and collagen supplementation. Honestly, I felt like I was missing out! Because, I wish I had started taking it, in my thirties! But, I know better late than never. So, I decided to give collagen powder a try.
What is Collagen?
Before we get to that, you may be wondering… What is collagen? Why (and when) do we need to take it as a supplement?
Collagen is the most plentiful protein in the body. It is found in most of our body parts. Our skin, muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, nails, teeth, etc. Some refer to collagen as the “glue” that holds everything together.
Our body, obviously, does a fine job in producing collagen. But, as we get older, our collagen production slows down. (Significantly, in our thirties.) That’s when we may notice a visible difference (usually, in our skin, first). Many studies have shown that collagen supplementation is effective with increasing collagen density and improving the laxity of chronologically aged skin! (Source) So, everywhere collagen exists, in our bodies, there is potential for improvement!
My Initial Experience with Collagen
I first ordered my collagen powder, from Amazon. It was another brand, but I opted for it because it came in a smaller size than the Ancient Nutrition Brand. (I needed to make sure it was something I could tolerate! And, I didn’t want to invest more than twenty bucks, the first time.
I was so surprised upon mixing the collagen powder into my coffee, the first time. It dissolved completely! In fact, it made my black coffee (before adding creamer) look like I had just added a little bit of cream. (That made sense to me, for some reason.) Then, I added cream to my coffee. When I drank it, I couldn’t tell there was something new mixed in!
Within just a few weeks, my collagen powder ran out. And, that’s when I started using Dr. Axe’s formula. (Ancient Nutrition Multi Collagen Protein.) The one thing that stood out to me (beside the fact that it was a bigger container) is that it contained 5 types of food source collagen. (It’s hard to find this, anywhere!)

Why I Take Collagen Powder
After several weeks of taking just one scoop of collagen powder, I am committed! I still think it’s relatively early to see much, visibly. But, based on some of the studies (You can read one, here), there is a lot going on that sometimes we just can’t see! The one thing I definitely noticed is that I don’t have any joint pain in my knees, like I used to have. All. The. Time! Mainly from exercising.
If this collagen powder is making a noticeable difference in my joints, I can optimistically anticipate great things happening under my skin. I’m confident that my collagen production is improving. Not to mention, at 46-years old, I want to do whatever I can to prevent the physical aging process. (Even though I do have pretty good genes, I still want all the help I can get!)
Why You Should Take a Collagen Supplement
As always, I recommend consulting with your doctor before doing anything different in your diet or physical regime. Presuming he/she is on board and you are in your mid-twenties or older, you may be a great candidate for taking collagen as a supplement! It’s very simple to add to your food or drink. (There are even a lot of recipes that include collagen powder as a tasteless filler!)
But, I’m definitely curious. Do you already take a collagen supplement? What have you noticed, so far? Tell me all about it, below, in the comments section!
