Scott and I just got home from a long weekend in Las Vegas. He surprised me with Celine Dion tickets, for my birthday. (Back in September.) I was a little concerned that it would be too much to travel to Las Vegas for a concert. Neither one of us wanted to spend too much money or run out of time to get our money’s worth. So, we agreed on the highlights we both wanted to see and do, and took it from there. Best of all? We did not break the bank. So, before you head out to Vegas for a long weekend, have a look to see how we spent our 72 hours!
Long Weekend in Vegas
Shortly after Scott surprised me with the tickets to see Celine Dion, I started to search for hotels. I typically use Trip Advisor. It has always come through for Scott and me. (The guest reviews are fairly reliable.) You can imagine my surprise when I saw one of the highest ranked hotels (the Wynn) offering a fabulous discount. During the time we’d be in Vegas! Scott was excited to see where we’d be staying. We were off to a great start.
Our flight was just fine. (Both ways, actually. Scott and I love Southwest Airlines, as they rarely disappoint!) We arrived in Vegas around 6pm, Friday evening Pacific Time. (It was 9pm Eastern Time.) Flying always takes a toll on me, so Scott and I agreed to spend our first evening, casual. Once settled at the beautiful Wynn resort, we freshened up and headed downstairs to an outdoor cocktail lounge. We saw one of the hotel’s most glorious spectacles: The Lake of Dreams. It was this beautiful show, on the lake and a manmade waterfall. With lights, music, and special effects.
Thankfully, we had beautiful weather this first week of November! High 70’s during the day, 60’s at night. Of course, we would have loved to have dined one night, outdoors, at this hotel. But we had other things planned for our short amount of time, in Vegas.
After a drink and watching one of the shows, Scott and I went for burgers inside the Wynn at “Charlie’s Bar & Grill”. We were pretty tired and wanted something simple. WOW! Their food was amazing! We ordered a burger, a buffalo chicken sandwich, and an order of fries. I think they were the best fries I’ve ever had in my entire life!
Saturday was our first full day, and we decided to walk around a bit outside the resort. The Wynn is not directly on the strip, but there is much to see and do, nearby. We walked through the Fashion Show mall, which was really cool. Scott bought me a dress for our next day, which we decided (kind of last minute) to spend at the Grand Canyon! We knew we’d have some great backdrops for some memorable photos.
After a bit of shopping, we had lunch at a Mexican place called El Segundo. We were back at the hotel early enough to spend a few hours at one of the Wynn’s most glorious pools!
I wish we had time to explore more of the Wynn hotel. All of the pools, the restaurants, the shops, etc. Everything was just so beautiful and spotless. Like Disney World! I think we could have spent an entire weekend, at this hotel, alone.
Celine Dion Concert
Saturday night was the night of the Celine Dion concert! Scott made dinner reservations at Joe’s Seafood, Ceasar’s Palace (where the concert would be held).
We had a delicious and romantic dinner! Stone crab claws (so big and fresh and delish). Filet with king crab legs and I honestly forget what Scott ordered. I was loyally committed to my filet and king crab! lol
Then, we went to the concert. It was incredible! I’ve always wanted to see Celine Dion perform in Vegas. She is better than ever!
On Sunday, Scott and I took a day trip to the Grand Canyon! We used Maverick Helicopter Tours. We figured, it would be worth the time and money since we may never get out to the Grand Canyon, as a trip, by itself. This tour company is awesome! And, they have tons of options. Scott and I selected the airplane trip, in which they shuttle you from your hotel to their airport. You board a small plane. (Yes! I was originally a nervous wreck, but was so captivated by the scenery, I made it just fine.) Once outside the Grand Canyon park, they shuttle you (via trolley) inside the park and drop you off at two different locations. Leaving just enough time to explore, take photos, enjoy lunch (which they provided), and peruse the gift shops. I’m so glad we did this! It was definitely worth it.
I know. I may seem a little overdressed. But, I only brought one coat with me to Vegas, and I knew it’d be a lot cooler in the Grand Canyon area! I also wore leggings under this dress. So, I was actually very comfortable. And, Scott and I ended up getting some really nice photos. (Framing!)
This excursion took up most of our day. (Like 6 hours.) We got back to the hotel around 4pm. I took a nap for an hour. Then, we had dinner reservations at 5:30 at a local Italian restaurant near a Comedy Show. (Scott picked out both. I loved the restaurant. The comedy show was, eh. OK.
We had dinner at Nora’s Italian Restaurant. Scott picked this place. It was off the beaten path, and known as a hot spot for the locals. Sure enough, our dinner did not disappoint! I had the wild boar ragu papardelle. Scott had a monstrous sized veal cutlet. We practically rolled out of there, after eating. lol
We did skip dessert! We had comedy show tickets. So, we dashed over to the Comedy Cellar (at a nearby casino). It was ok. Perhaps we just didn’t get the best selection of comedians. This was probably the only thing I wish we had omitted. Maybe have gone to see Michael Jackson Circue Du Soleil. (Scott was afraid he’d be bored at a “circus-type” of show. But, neither one of us know what we’re missing!) We’ll do a Circue Du Soleil show, next time!
YES! We hope to return to Vegas. Hopefully, for a minimum of four days. I feel that unless you’ve been or go regularly, you need a good four days to see the highlights and pace yourself! Scott and I did try to get a lot in for those two full days and one short evening. We left on Monday morning and boarded our flight back to New Jersey at 8:30am Pacific Time.
Overall, Scott and I had a magnificent long weekend in Las Vegas! We do hope to return and spend a little more time there. Here are the highlights I’d recommend for anyone visiting Las Vegas for the first time.
- Stay at the Wynn Hotel!
- Try to spend as much time as possible at the Wynn Hotel. Pool. Restaurants. Shops. Dine by the Lake of Dreams!!
- If you have the time and funds, book a day trip to the Grand Canyon!
- Definitely see Celine Dion! Probably the best regularly scheduled show in Vegas.
- Dine at Nora’s Italian Restaurant! Even if for one evening. You’ll get so much more food (and better quality) than the high end restaurants in the casinos!
