Home Reno - Before & After - Part 1

The House on High Street

I’ve been wanting to put this Home Reno post together, for some time, now. Here are the (long-awaited) “BEFORE” and “AFTER” shots of The House on High Street. I’m going to do this in two parts. This post will focus on the first floor.

These before and after photos encourage me. They remind me of how God can take ANY situation…no matter how old, how helpless, or how “AWFUL” it may seem, and restore it into something beautiful. I hope these photos encourage you, the same. xo

BEFORE: Ok. Let’s start with my First Impression. This was the first room Scott and I entered, with our realtor, (in the back of the house). Needless to say, it wasn’t looking very promising.

This was the "Ugly Addition" that had a spiral staircase up to a loft. Not sure when this was built, but most likely, this is where the servants worked and slept.

AFTER: Now, this room is a sun room. Very sunny and cheery. We have our kitchen table in here, but we made it semi-formal. This room is great for parties, hosting an intimate dinner, and/or using it as a playroom.

BEFORE: The Kitchen

This room was in the back corner, on the right, and on the first floor. It wasn't very sunny after the am hours, as the sun went along the front of the house.

AFTER: Rachel Maria’s Kitchen!

This is Rachel Maria's Kitchen! It gets sun all day because there is no longer a wall separating this back corner room from the front of the house. You can see the sunroom back there.

BEFORE: Closet & Hidden Staircase

This shows a wall (that would later be removed to expose an old staircase) and another wall that would soon be completely opened up to make two rooms into one GREAT room.

AFTER: Kitchen with Cabinets and Pantry in lieu of Staircase wall. Pocket Door for that 18th Century-feel.

So, this wall of cabinets was placed where that hidden staircase was. You can also see where we installed a pocket door. Can you see the sunroom back there? Obviously, with a ginormous 9 foot island, you can’t always fit a kitchen table in the same space. It works for us!

BEFORE: Family Room.

This shows the wall and a puny door separating two rooms (and keeping full-day sun from that back room). This wall coming down was our very first project, together! TIMBER!!

Here is that same view today. Big difference, huh?

AFTER: Center Hallway. We opened up both entrances to The Great Room & The Formal Room with French Doors; We added beautiful sconces, and spent DAYS fixing up this staircase.

This hallway is a lot brighter now. We added a powder bath back there, glass windows to the original front door, and a window at the first landing on the left side. You can also see the French Doors on both sides leading to The Great Room & The Formal Room.
I love looking up!

The hallway looks so pretty at night with the candle-lit sconces and the staircase dressed up for the holidays.

BEFORE: The Formal Room

This was how the Formal Room looked. It was in the best conditioned, and it was beautifully adorned with fascinating plaster work. It wasn't very hard to vision this room all fixed up.
This was how the Formal Room looked. Out of all the rooms, this one was the prettiest, even in this state. It was proudly showing off exquisite plaster work, marble fireplaces, and elegant chandeliers. Everything was just…old and neglected. We could not wait to clean this room up. But don’t be fooled, it wasn’t exactly easy nor an overnight kind of a project!

AFTER: The Formal Room

And, here she is today. Well, this photo was taken before our real dining table was delivered. We've already hosted a holiday, a party, a luncheon, and after this weekend....a special birthday dinner. It is still our favorite room.
And, here she is today. Well, this photo was taken before our real dining table was delivered. We’ve already hosted a holiday, a party, a luncheon, and after this weekend….a special birthday dinner. It is still our favorite room, and there is still more to do. Anyone interested in helping me sew window treatments??

Well, there you have it. We’ll do the second floor, later. (That’ll be Part Two.) It takes a long time to get these pictures uploaded. I leave you with several other randoms, of the first floor, at The House on High Street. By the way, I’ve been told that it is even prettier in person. So, if you’re not satisfied and want to visit, just let me know. xo
