I’m often told that I look young for forty-five. Of course, I’m grateful, and I owe a lot to my parents’ genetics. (Mom doesn’t have wrinkles, and she’s in her 70’s!) But, regardless of genetics, there are a few tricks I’ve learned along the way. From my mom and her mom. (My grandmother also looked good for her age, even though she had a bad heart and died fairly young.) It just so happens that there are easy ways to maintain a youthful look. These are things you can implement right now!
Easy Ways to Maintain a Youthful Look
I have five easy tips to share. They may seem like common sense, but you may need to write them down or make a checklist so you hold yourself accountable. I’m telling you, if you implement these five things, today, you will notice a difference! You will feel younger and others will notice. Here we go…
Eat More Fat
Women who are super slim appear older than those that possess curves. It’s true! If we are super stingy with ingesting healthy fats in order to appear leaner, it can add years to our face.
Both omega-3 fats (such as ghee, eggs, salmon, walnuts) and monounsaturated fats (such as olive oil and avocados) help lower cholesterol and support heart health. Adding fats, such as these, will help balance our diet and keep us full for longer periods of time. So, as long as we can reconcile with being healthy and balanced over skinny, we will be maintaining a more youthful look.
Relax and Get to Bed Earlier
When I look at photos of myself in my 30’s I notice that I look tired and sometimes, haggard! I was overextending myself. Working too hard. Pushing myself. Staying up too late. And, not getting enough sleep. I had bags under my eyes all the time.
A recent autoimmune diagnosis has dictated a more sedentary lifestyle, for me. It’s bittersweet. But, in trying to maintain a more youthful look (just like any other woman I know), I’m also being mindful of taking it easy on my body. I often say no to going out. I opt for evenings at home so that I can get to bed on the earlier side. I definitely notice a difference in my appearance. I don’t have those bags under my eyes. (Unless it’s severe allergy season!)
Try switching things up in your lifestyle. Instead of meeting friends out late for some drinks, meet up for lunch on a Saturday. Be intentional about getting to bed earlier and you’ll look and feel more youthful in no time at all!
Get your blood circulating
Obviously, the easiest way to do this is by exercising. But, that doesn’t mean you need to have a gym membership or even perform the act of “exercise”. Opt for physical activities (earlier in the day, if possible) over sedentary ones. Even if it’s cleaning or gardening.
In fact, as the day goes on, your activity should decline. So, plan out your day like a declining slope. For example, consider exercising before work and taking a bath before bed over showing in the morning and going to the gym later in the evening.
Also, sex. (Yes, I said it.) It happens to be a great way to increase circulation.
According to Psychological Science, sex is proven to play a fundamental role in preserving a younger look. Partners can experience a sexual “afterglow” that lasts for up to 48 hours following sexual intercourse. Sex increases blood circulation, which helps pump oxygen to our skin resulting in a brighter appearance. (Source)
Be mindful of movement. Blood circulation is key to maintaining a more youthful look!
Pamper Yourself, Regularly
If you want to maintain a youthful look, it may require a little more than just time and effort. I realize many women do not want to spend the money on hair, nails, facials, etc. But, there are strategies to invest in ourselves, wisely.
For example, compensate!
I make no bones about getting regular facials, massages, and pedicures. But, I compensate and practice DIY, whenever I can. I haven’t been to a hairdresser in over a year! I do my own hair because I can. I recently purchased a membership at a local Hand & Stone massage and facial spa. It offers exceptional services at affordable prices. I have noticed such a difference in the way I look and feel, ever since I joined.
Also, I’ve recently experienced the benefits of detox baths! They do wonders especially for those of us who have autoimmune disorders (and/or genetic mutations such as MTHFR). Removing toxins, in general, is a surefire way to maintain a more youthful look!
Consider adding even one pampering experience into your monthly routine, today. You’ll be noticing a difference, too.
Drink More Water
Ok, this is a no-brainer. By now, we all know the benefits of drinking water. Water gives you energy, aids in digestion, keeps your organs working properly, keeps your mind sharp, flushes out toxins, etc. But, studies are showing that drinking a lot of water can help with looking more youthful!
This photo, for example, was taken in conjunction to a study in the UK. Women who drank a bunch of water for a month ended up looking dramatically younger at the end of the trial!
It’s just that it’s easier said than done. Trust me. I get it.
Here are some strategies to help us actually Drink. More. Water.
Water bottles with time markers. That’s right! These water bottles give you incentives to finish drinking water! Next time you want to replace your water bottle, try something like this!
Last but not least, try forming a habit.
Simply, try to get into the habit of drinking a glass of water (or two) before every meal! Every snack. Every drink. This may take longer than you think before it becomes a habit. According to Gretchen Rubin, the author of The Happiness Project and Better than Before, it takes 60 days for something to become “as much of a habit as it would become”.
Well, there you have it. A few easy ways to maintain a more youthful look. At the end of the day, feeling good and looking our best go hand in hand. Hopefully, some of these ideas will keep you on the right path. At the end of the day, we are choosing to live extraordinary lifestyles. So, I hope you got some ideas from this post.
