Acai Bowl ~ WHERE Have You Been All My Life?

Foster Care & Family

It looks like sorbet. Tastes like sorbet. And, it’s one of THE GREATEST SUPERFOODS ON THE PLANET! Acai (pronounced ah-sah-ee’) is a small, dark purple fruit that is found in tropical rain forests. An acai bowl is created with acai pulp, typically blended with additional frozen fruit, and topped with treasures of you name it…Granola, Coconut, Berries, banana, cacao nibs, etc. I seriously don’t understand how I have gone over 45 years without even trying an acai bowl. To say that I am now eternally hooked, is an understatement.

What’s So Great About Acai?

Acai is actually a drupe. More similar to apricots or olives due to their large seed.

Even though acai is referred to as a berry. It’s actually a drupe because of it’s large seed. But we might as well refer to it as a berry like half of the human population. (Because berry sounds so much better than drupe!)

Unlike most fruits which are high in sugar and low in fat, the acai berry is high in fat and low in sugar! And, that’s not the only quality that makes this a super food.

100 grams of frozen acai fruit pulp has the following nutritional breakdown (source):

  • Calories: 70
  • Fat: 5 grams
  • Saturated fat: 1.5 grams
  • Carbs: 4 grams
  • Sugar: 2 grams
  • Fiber 2 grams
  • Vitamin A: 15% of the RDI
  • Calcium: 2% of the RDI

Some studies show that acai berries contain a bunch of minerals, such as zinc, iron, magnesium, and potassium, to name a few. Other studies show that acai fruit pulp is rich with antioxidants. (More than cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, or blueberries.) Source

I’ve also read about acai helping with improving cholesterol levels and improving brain function. But, I don’t think you need to know anything more about the benefits of the acai fruit. I’d rather get to my favorite way to eat acai!

Acai Bowl

Believe it or not, I just had my first acai bowl, just a few weeks ago. I was immediately hooked! It was so much tastier than I could have ever imagined. Not only did I enjoy every bite… I couldn’t even finish the entire bowl because it was so satisfying. I felt full for HOURS, after. (That says a lot, because you all know that I have the appetite of a giant wildebeest. lol)

It was just enough to convince me to make one myself…

Scott picked up this brand, from Trader Joe’s. (I believe you can also get it from Target, Walmart. I’m pretty sure most grocery stores now carry some similar brand.) I think this brand, SAMBAZON, is one of the best ones out there. I already received a lot of positive feedback from my audience on Instagram. And, the ingredients are organic and paleo!

This is my favorite brand of Acai berry puree because of it’s ingredients.

It comes in four frozen pouches. All you do is run it under water for just a minute or two! You merely want to slide it out of the packet and into your blender. (So try to keep it frozen.)

One pouch can make two servings. Because you will add other ingredients. This is what I add to make my acai puree into a slushy water-ice type of consistency:

  • One Acai Superfruit Pouch
  • 1 Cup of Yogurt (can be almond milk based if you prefer)
  • 1/4 cup frozen fruit (any fruit you can also use just ice to reduce sugar and calories.)
  • 1/2 cup of milk (or almond milk)

After it is blended, you simply transfer it to a bowl and add your favorite toppings. (Of course, you can make it more liquified and just drink it like a shake! And, there are so many ways to blend it up. Don’t be afraid to experiment.)

My favorite toppings are:

  • Granola (A MUST!)
  • Coconut
  • Fruit: Berries, banana, sliced mango, or kiwi
  • Sprinkle with chia seeds
